Multiple scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of candidates’ academic performance and demonstrated passion for computer science. A group of Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD students will be chosen from the applicant pool. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of researchers and engineers. The scholarship recipients will each receive a € 7,000 (or equivalent) scholarship for the 2010/2011 academic year.
In June 2010, all scholarship recipients will be invited to visit Google’s Engineering Centre in Zurich for an all-expenses-paid networking retreat. It will include workshops with a series of speakers, panels, breakout sessions and social activities, and will provide an opportunity to meet and share experiences.

The coming years will show a proliferation of Global and Regional Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS/RNSS). This promise of a broader multi-frequency, multi-constellation “system of systems” has the potential to enable a wide range of demanding applications for high-accuracy Australian GNSS/RNSS users.
PhD Scholarship in GNSS at Curtin University To improve Australia’s capability in utilising the next generation GNSSs and to come to a fullest exploitation of the opportunities created, Curtin University of Technology will establish a new GNSS research group. The group’s research programme aims at developing theory, models and methods that will enable future GNSSs to fulfil the highaccuracy
and high-integrity requirements of tomorrow’s geospatial information needs in the Earth-, atmospheric- and space-sciences.
This GNSS programme is also timely because of the forthcoming GNSS CORS
network across Australia as part of the AuScope Geospatial programme. This will provide an excellent large-area ‘field laboratory’ in which to first test, then implement, the results generated by this programme. Applications are invited for an inter-school PhD studentship at Cardiff University, based in the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Group, School of Psychology, and the Wolfson Centre for Magnetics, School of Engineering. This is a unique opportunity for an enthusiastic and dedicated student to play a pivotal role in the Integrated Brain Imaging and Stimulation Project (IBIS), a collaborative grant funded by the Welsh Assembly Government between the Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC), the Wolfson Centre for Magnetics, and The Magstim Company.
In particular, the PhD project will focus on the design and implementation of deep-brain stimulation methods for TMS, and on the development and application of simultaneous TMS and magnetic resonance imaging at CUBRIC.
The 3-year studentship is £13,290 per annum plus tuition fees and will commence on April 1st, 2010. The student will be jointly supervised by Dr Chris Chambers (School of Psychology) and Professor David Jiles (School of Engineering).

The Wind Energy Division at Risø DTU, Technical University of Denmark, is seeking a PhD fellow (employee) to work on the improvement and validation of a engineering aerodynamic models for wind turbines. This PhD position is associated with the Marie Curie Initial Training Programme, SYS.WIND. As part of the SYS.WIND project, the PhD student will be involved in an international network of young researchers, focused around different aspects of system identification, condition and health monitoring. Job Description
This PhD position is concerned with improving and refining existing engineering models for dynamic stall and stall delay. Engineering models are widely used in industry, and further development of the models based on the newest experimental data supplemented by Computational Fluid Dynamics studies will be important for the predictive capability of modern aeroelastic codes. Additionally, the aerodynamics is an essential part of understanding the load situations experience by a turbine during its lifetime.
The PhD employee’s main focus will be to combining results from existing Navier-Stokes computations, model experiments of airfoils and rotors in wind tunnels (NREL Phase-VI and MEXICO) and full scale experiments (DanAero).
Qualifications
Candidates should have a master’s degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering. You are expected to have good written and oral communication skills in English. Previous experience with wind turbine aerodynamics, analyzing measurements, CFD, C/Fortran programming and project management would be considered an advantage. The University of Twente is an entrepreneurial research university. It was founded in 1961 and offers education and research in areas ranging from public policy studies and applied physics to biomedical technology. The University of Twente is the Netherlands’ only campus university.
TU Delft was founded in 1842 as the Royal Academy by King Willem II. It has been known as the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) since 1986.

Two PhD positions biomechatronic design and control of a wearable exoskeleton
Project
The University of Twente (UT) and Delft University of Technology (TUD) aim to develop a wearable exoskeleton to assist human walking. This development project is part of larger project named MindWalker that has been funded by the European Union.
The purpose of the MindWalker project is to conceive a system empowering lower limbs disabled people with walking abilities that let them perform their usual daily activities in the most autonomous and natural manner. Novel approaches to non-invasive Brain Computer Interfaces will be used in order to control a lower limbs orthosis enabling different types of gaits. Newly developed EEG bio-sensors will be applied to enable lightweight wearable EEG caps for everyday use.
The PhD position at the TUD will focus on the mechatronic design and testing of the wearable exoskeleton, with the focus on low-level control aimed at walking stability. The challenge is to keep it lightweight, comfortable and cosmetic acceptable, and autonomous.
The PhD position at the UT will focus on the high level control of the wearable exoskeleton including the user interaction, guaranteeing stability of walking and controllability by the user. In the first phase of the project extensive use will be made of previously lab bound LOPES robotic gait trainer to experiment with user interaction.
Both PhD students will collaborate closely with the other partners of the consortium that consists of European research institutes and business companies. Bachelor and master students will also be involved in the project and the candidate will have an important role in the daily supervision of these students. A modest contribution in the educational tasks will also be demanded.
Profile
We are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic researchers with a master degree in Mechanical or Control Engineering or a closely related field, with outstanding results. A strong background in biomechanics and modeling of dynamical systems and control engineering is preferred. We seek for candidates with good team spirit, who like to work in an internationally oriented environment. Fluency in English is a requirement. An interview and a scientific presentation will be part of the selection procedure.

We offer a scientific education on a multidisciplinary subject. The assignment is for 4 years, with a go/no-go assessment at the end of the first year. The candidates are expected to finish the project with a PhD thesis and disseminate the results through patents (if applicable), publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences. Your starting salary will be € 2042,-,gross per month in the first year, leading up to € 2612, – gross per month in the last year, according to the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. Each year, the Cartography and Geographic Information Society (CaGIS) sponsors two scholarships to students whose research and accomplishments support the mission of CaGIS. The scholarships recognize academic achievement and encourage the continuing success of outstanding cartography, geographic information systems (GIS), and geographic information science (GIScience) students. The scholarships also recognize achievement or potential for achievement in original research advancing the specific disciplines of cartography or GIScience. Winners are selected based on academic achievement, particularly in the calendar year prior to the award. Applications are reviewed by the CaGIS Scholarship Committee, and awards are announced in February or March.

CaGIS Masters Scholarship Award ($500): This award is to be granted to a student enrolled in, or accepted into, a Masters’ degree program during 2009 or 2010. The winner will have demonstrated excellence in cartography or GIScience coursework and the potential to contribute to cartography or GIScience research. Outstanding undergraduates seeking to support Masters’ level research in GIScience are also eligible to apply (see below).
CaGIS Doctoral Scholarship Award ($1000): This award is to be granted to a student enrolled in, or accepted into, a PhD degree program during 2009 or 2010. The winner will have demonstrated excellence in cartography or GIScience coursework and the potential to contribute to cartography or GIScience research.
Winners are invited to present their research at an upcoming CaGIS-sponsored conference (such as AAG, GIScience, or AutoCarto) and may be eligible for limited travel or registration support if they choose to present.
Eligibility
Candidates must be enrolled full-time in a four-year undergraduate or graduate degree program during 2009 or 2010, studying cartography, geographic information science, or a closely related field. A letter of recommendation from a faculty member attesting to these eligibility requirements and to scholarly achievement and potential is required. Membership in CaGIS is not required, though professional and service activities such as participation in CaGIS is one of the selection criteria (see below). Prior scholarship winners are eligible to apply in subsequent years if all appropriate criteria are satisfied. Undergraduate applicants who have not yet been accepted into graduate school should request that their faculty advisor assess their potential for graduate study in their reference letter.
Selection Criteria
Valid applications for CaGIS awards (see below for application procedures) are reviewed by the CaGIS Scholarship Committee, which will use the following criteria to judge applications:
Level of financial need will be considered, if necessary, to break ties, after the primary criteria have been considered. The committee can choose to award no scholarships.
